Are these stock servers, originally installed on VMware vSphere or P2Vs?

Hang on Shutdown is usually caused  by software drivers not unloading.

VMware Tools is installed.
vmichAuthor Commented:
yes VMware tools is installed.
No all 3 of the servers were all created as vms from the beginning.

windows update
vmich. There is currently an issue with VmWare ESXI V5.5 Host OS that causes Windows Update installs to HANG during startup and shutdown once updates are applied. I think you will find that this will occur everytime you install updates. We started noticing this issue not long after upgrading to 5.5

If you contact Vmware i think you will find this will be the case. We have almost 30-40 Windows based machines and during our patching day 2-3 freeze/hang on shutdown or startup. We contacted Vmware and it's an issue with the SCSI controller which has been resolved in ESXI 6.

I don't have the support article handy but if i come across it i'll let you know.
vmichAuthor Commented:
Ok great.. Thanks for that info because we just finished upgrading all of the rest of the host to ESXi 6
