Word/Doc to CHM

What's the best bet for converting a Word/Doc file to CHM?

I am doing C++ / MFC development and have a document that I'd like to use for help. Ideally, I'd eventually like to have the ability for the program to do searches for a given page so that I can add a context sensitive F1 key.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I do not know what it's worth today, but in my VB6 and .hlp times, I used Word Doc-To-Help with great results. One its great features was that you could generate different types of documentation from the same document. all of this directly from Word.

All the solutions will use html workshop. It (html workshop) can be used on its own but OMG clunky! Some of the evaluation versions (inc DrExp) are fully functional but leave a watermark.

None of these really help me.

Doc-to-Help looks like it would work but costs $1000
DrExplain  doesn't work -- as it won't convert a standard doc file to an html (not included in the acceptable solutions)
HTML Workshop works but does look pretty hard to use
