Office 2013 Mailmerge, selecting data source

When I am doing a letter Mailmerge, I click Select Recipient/Use an Existing List and expect to see a select a file dialog box. Instead I get no response. This happens with an existing Word document or an empty file. I'm stuck.

How can I select the data file?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I was in compatibility mode (.doc). When I saved it as a .docx file, all went well.

I'm not sure what the solution really is. To get the drop-down selection to work reliably, I had to type the underlined menu letter (e) to make it work. Same for another Word drop-down menu too.
