How active is your db, increase the frequency at which the log shipping runs to every 15 minutes.

Was db mirroring a consideration, evaluated?

I did not get the question which log shipping  . I know only one log shipping and compress  enable this time
Log shipping involves transfer of transactions.
You can alter the log shipping to make them run more frequently, meaning during that 15 minute interval the amount of data to transfer would be lower.

Not sure what backup file you are talking about.  The backup of the full database is the sum of the main database file, and the transaction log file. You may have an issue of an active transaction leading to the increasing size of the transaction log.
