http file download

I have two files which users can select to download
x.exe (windows) or x.dmg (mac)

the html code reads
<a href="http://www.y.com/files/x.com">File x windows</a>
<a href="http://www.y.com/files/x.dmg">File x mac</a>

when a user clicks on File x windows it downloads the file
if a user clicks on FIle x mac they get a 404 error

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

It's probably a web server config problem:
Here's a hint:
file name extention : dmg
MIME type : application/octet-stream

To know if it's a webserver problem, the Windows link should work on the Mac (download only, not actually running it), and the Mac link should fail on Windows.
