Wsus downstream servers setup

Hi

How can i transfer the WsusContent from the main Upstream WSUS server to slower WAN link DownStream WSUS servers ?

i tried to copy the WSUSContent and UpdateServicesDbFiles then raplacing it on the DownStream WSUS Servers but they all get detected as one when you connect to Upstream WSUS.

The Main issue is that the WAN links don't have enough Bandwidth.

I think that you only need to copy de WSUSContent folder. Then when you approve an update on the downstream server, it will check if it is already on the local folder. Downstream WSUS will download only the missing packages from the Upstrem Server.

To copy the WSUS folder preserving the subfolders structure, NTFS permissions and datastreams you will have to use this steps:

1. On your main WSUS server, the one that takes updates directly from Microsoft, run the NTBackup native tool.
2. The Backup or Restore Wizard starts by default, unless it is disabled. You can use this wizard or click the link to work in Advanced Mode and use the following steps.
3. Click the Backup tab, and then specify the folder where updates are stored on the WSUS server. By default, WSUS stores updates at WSUSInstallationDrive:\WSUS\WSUSContent\.
4. In Backup media or file name, type a path and file name for the backup (.bkf) file.
5. Click Start Backup. The Backup Job Information dialog box appears.
6. Click Advanced. Under Backup Type, click Incremental.
7. From the Backup Job Information dialog box, click Start Backup to start the backup operation.
8. Once completed, copy the backup file you just created to the downstream WSUS server.
9. On the downstream WSUS server run the NTBackup tool.
10. Click the Restore and Manage Media tab, and select the backup file you created on the main WSUS server. If the file does not appear, right-click File, and then click Catalog File to add the location of the file.
10. In Restore files to, click Alternate location. This option preserves the folder structure of the updates; all folders and subfolders will appear in the folder you designate. You must maintain the directory structure for all folders under \WSUSContent.
11. Under Alternate location, specify the folder where updates are stored on the downstream WSUS server. By default, WSUS stores updates at WSUSInstallationDrive:\WSUS\WSUSContent\.
