What Rack Mounted NAS's would you recommend as local backup target for Veeam?

We're moving to a data center space and will need some rack mounted NAS space for Veeam back-ups in a hyper-v environment. I'd like at least 4TB but up to 12TB of local storage? Any brands or features you recommend?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

At a previous job, we ended up buying several rackmount QNAPs with 6-8 drives. These served pretty well and most of what we expected them to do was house backups and archives. Since we were using a mixture of Windows servers and VMware-hosted Windows servers, we had the QNAPs doing both iSCSI and NFS. I think there's been a newer generation or two since then, so I won't try to cite specific model numbers.

There's also the route of using a somewhat outdated server with sufficient disk space and running FreeNAS or whatever you favor for NAS software. It can be a way to re-use equipment that you'd otherwise be disposing of.

I don't know anything bad about other brands than QNAP, just don't have experience with them. At the time we were making the purchase, they just came out on top in the price/feature comparison.

I second QNAP - had several units running for the last 3 years and no problems. Also we introduced them to a small datacenter company who now swear by them as well.
