Laptops and mobile devices get very slow WiFi

I need to isolate the slowness being experienced by laptop and mobile users. I know there are devices like the access points, switches, wifi controller, router that need to be looked at. The internet speed I'm getting from the access points is terrible. Are there any tools, utilities. programs that can help me quickly identify where the bottleneck is?

I think I would start by selecting an off-hour period and limiting the number of wireless devices on the network. Ask that all mobile devices be disconnected.

Now take a known good laptop and go to the start point. Good speed or NO?  Move back to the next point and test. Work back until you find a device that is slow.

If all devices and access points are good, you may have a congestion problem of too many devices or perhaps users are downloading excessive content.

Don't expect too much. An AP might be labled 54mb, but that is a not the throughput you will get. A typical scenario might give you a 20mb connection at each client. If you have 10 clients trying to transfer data at once, they therefore get a 2mb each. Wireless usually uses CSMA/CA, to mediate access, this can halve throughput under a worst case scenario, and remember this is half duplex.  Thus, 20 users connected to a 54Mb WAP, will only be getting 1Mb or so throughput.

Wireless should always be considered as a slower, less reliable connection method. 100Mb Ethernet will always be much quicker.

I would certainly start here by checking throughput for wired clients. If that is OK, grab some software and start doing a site survey, make sure every client is getting a strong signal, and each AP is on its own non-overlapping channel. Sometimes the signal strength can be a little mysterious; walls and other objects can shield access in areas that are quite close to a base, while areas further away get a strong signal.
First thing is define "slow".  Are the users expecting the same performance as a wired 1Gbps Ethernet connection and they are upset because they are only getting 150 Mbps?  If so, then their expectations need to be changed.

You need to look at your equipment and see what it supports.

As Malmensa pointed out, you need to see how many people are connecting to each WAP.
