Skype appears as offline, but it's online

Skype icon shows like Skype is offline, but it's for sure online since I send messages regularly to all my contacts and they get messages. The little circle right next to my photo in upper right corner is constantly is spinning like it's trying to connect!!!

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

one possibility is that you asked skype to be available but shown as offline which is a valid status that will let you send and receive messages while being seen as offline both to your friends and in the status icon.

if not, you're most likely on a network that either filters some ports, or is loosing packets ( i frequently see the same issue on a poor wifi connection i have ). skype does a great deal of efforts into circumventing both firewalls and poor network connectivity. i hardly believe the ms guys did that much effort when it comes to detecting the user's status. they could easily do that through a single https connection to their own servers which could fail for any number of reasons. additionnally they may be perfectly legit into assuming that you're only available if you were properly connected for a minute or so which might simply not happen in your case.

a network sniffer would help to know what is what, but i hardly believe it worth the effort.

other relevant information would be wether video conference works properly or not. a closed port or specific config will not prevent these from working. a faulty network would probably be able to convey audio decently but not seemlessly but would surely fail on video.

At least in my area Skype died for many of my users about 2 hours ago, phone is constantly ringing with the same complain (so I guess - all of them), maybe it is connected with your case (Microsoft has some problem with Skype servers).

hI,

This is comment from SKYPE

We have detected an issue that is affecting Skype in a number of ways.

If you’re signed in to Skype, you will not be able to change your status and your contacts will all show as offline even if they are online. As a result, you won’t be able to start Skype calls to them.
    .
A small number of messages to group chats are not being delivered, but in most cases you can still instant message your contacts.
    .
If you aren’t signed in to Skype, you may be experiencing difficulty when attempting to sign in.
Any changes to your Skype account such as your Credit balance or your profile details might take a little while to be displayed.
    .
You may also have difficulty loading web pages on the Skype Community. For that reason, please check back here for future updates.
    .

Many users have had success using Skype for Web to send instant messages and make Skype calls. You can access Skype for Web at:

We’re doing everything we can to fix this issue and hope to have another update for you soon. Thank you for your patience as we work to get this incident resolved.
