I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Things to check:
1. Open Device Manager. Check Network adaoters, do any have a yellow exclamation mark? If so, a new driver is required. Check the Network and Sharing center as well, is the Ethernet adapter visible and enabled?
2. Open command prompt and try these commands:
a) ping 127.0.0.1. Do you get a response?
b) ipconfig, then ping <your ip address>. Do you get a response?
c) ping <your gateway address> (This is usally the address of your ADSL modem).
d) IPConfig /All and note down the DNS server addresses. Are they listed and can you ping them?
e) Run NSLookup and enter a few web addresses e.g. www.bbc.co.uk
