Java is a platform-independent, object-oriented programming language and run-time environment, designed to have as few implementation dependencies as possible such that developers can write one set of code across all platforms using libraries. Most devices will not run Java natively, and require a run-time component to be installed in order to execute a Java program.

Java Enterprise Edition (Java EE) is a specification defining a collection of Java-based server and client technologies and how they interoperate. Java EE specifies server and client architectures and uses profiles to define technology sets targeted at specific classes of applications. All Java EE profiles share a set of common features, such as naming and resource injection, packaging rules and security requirements.

An application server is a software framework that provides both facilities to create applications and a server environment to run them. Most application server frameworks contain a comprehensive service layer model, acting as a set of components accessible to the software developer through an API defined by the platform itself. For Web applications, these components are usually performed in the same running environment as their web server(s), and their main job is to support the construction of dynamic pages. However, many application servers target much more than just Web page generation: they implement services like clustering, fail-over, and load-balancing.

Application Servers

JavaServer Pages (JSP) allow the development of dynamically generated web pages. It uses the Java programming language; JSP pages are translated into servlets at runtime, with each servlet being cached and reused until the JSP is modified. JSP allows Java code to be interleaved with static web markup content, so the resulting page can be compiled and executed on the server to deliver the content.

A web application framework (WAF) is a software framework that is designed to support the development of dynamic websites, web applications, web services and web resources. The framework aims to alleviate the overhead associated with common activities performed in web development. Most common web application frameworks are defined by specific subsets, including ASP.NET, JaveEE, Symfony, ColdFusion Language (CFML), Laravel, jQuery and AngularJS, or for the related languages, including .NET, PHP, JavaScript, Java, Perl, Python, Ruby, C++ and C.
