SQL Server 2014 build VMware server

Is there a recommended spec I should use for an SQL 2014 server on VMware.
This is especially relevant in relation to processors.

Do we want to start with 1 socket or 2 sockets in vmware nevermind the cores for now we can decide on this.
Is there anything recommended by Microsoft for the amount of sockets used?

Somebody is going to ask is this clustered, no fyi.

any help appreciated.

It depends on the workload and how much performance you need for your application. The same version will install and run with 1 CPU and 1GB of RAM as well as 16 CPU and 1024GB of RAM (requires Ent ed.)
The question is really what do you need to support.

i knew this was the response I would get and id probably ask the same questions.

unfortunately i cannot answer used different resources and went with 2 sockets for a few reasons, we are not exactly under resourced.

now that we have 2 sockets were not removing 1 as that is bad practice in vmware. thanks anyway.

It really depends.
Are you going to use it for which environment? DEV? TEST? PROD?
How many SQL Server instances will be installed in the server?
How many databases by instance?
How large are the databases?
How big is the larger databases?
How many users will be connected simultaneously?
How many transactions by seconds will be expected?
There will be more applications installed apart from SQL Server instances?
If so, which applications will be installed?
