"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

And you cannot cope with the Express Studio?

I have a 2008 sql database that my express 2005 wont connect to.  It says this version of SQL server management studio express can only be used to connect to SQL server 2000 and 2005 servers.

Correct. To use anything but the Query tool, you need a SSMS of the same or higher release.

Is your W7 up to date, including Service Pack 1?
As I have no clue why the setup crashes, you could try if SSMS 2008r2 or higher works for you.
