Rename .Dat fle to .txt files

I am setting up a conversion of data.  If 'crawls' thru a specified directory looking for files with certain names.

Once found it imports and converts them into the client database.

The conversion files are all coming with an extension of .dat, which is how they are generated from the existing application.

When trying to import the .dat files, even with an import spec I get a message that they cannot be imported.

'
DoCmd.TransferText acImportFixed, _
                   passedImportSpec, _
                   passedImportTable, _
                   passedImportFile, _
                   False

Initially I have been renaming them manually to have a .txt extension, then running the conversion.

Currently there are over 60 files involved in the conversion so the manual renaming is getting tiresome each time we test.  I would like a routine that 'crawls' through a supplied directory renaming all oof the files with a .dat extension to have a .txt extension.

Does anyone have examples of how this could be done.
