SBS2011 DNS Queries

Hi Guys,

I have a couple of queries which hopefully you can help me with. Our SBS2011 is running fine but when I run the Fix My Network wizard from the standard console I get two errors that wont go away even though the wizard tells me they are fixed until I run it again.

The errors are: -
Static IP address for IPV6 is not configured
The DNS server is not listening to the IP address of the primary network adapter

I have done IPconfig /all and have attached a screen shot.

Thoughts and advice would be appreciated please.

For the IPv6 issue, just switch the configuration to automatic for both IP Address and DNS server address.

Can you post the configuration of your DNS Service?  Specifically, right click the DNS server in the DNS MMC and select properties.  Please post the Interfaces tab.

Personally I wouldn't worry about these if you're not having any issues.

From the screen shot I can see that you're DNS IP is the same as the servers and there is a IPv6 Address assigned.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for such a quick response, the IPv6 is actually already set to those settings. Please see attached DNS Manager screenshot.

Hi David,

I agree its not causing an issue, but its more of an annoyance really as something isn't quite right.

I recommend unchecking the IPv6 address for DNS. IPv6 address starting with fe80: addresses are local link and only valid for the local network subnet, they are not routable.

Why is the server dual homed?  Your ipconfig is showing a LAN connection and a PPP connection.

Dan
Dan McFaddenSystems EngineerCommented:
The IPv6 DNS message is due to the dynamic address.  DNS wants a static address....  Its just not necessary to enable the IPv6 interface for DNS.

Hi Dan,

I've unchecked the IPv6 address for DNS in the manager properties but its still throws the same error.

I don't understand what you mean by the server is dual homed, I see what you are saying from the ipconfig but dont know what it means.

Steve

Why is your server using PPP over RAS and getting a second IP:  192.168.1.44?

Essentially allowing the server 2 network connections on different networks or 2 connections on the same subnet.

Have you restarted DNS?

Dan
SteveWright01Author Commented:
Hi Dan

Hi Dan,

Yes I've restarted the DNS a couple of times and that's made no difference.

I assume that the server is using PPP over RAS to allow a VPN connection, as we have two laptop users that work remotely occasionally, would this be correct?

I appreciate your time in replying with these answers.

Regards,

Steve

I would read thru this article (its for server 2003) but the concept is the same.  You need to make sure that the SBS is not registering its IP for the PPP/RAS connection.  It can cause various problems.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for that, I've fixed one bit so please see attached screen shot. Still got the other two issues though.

Kind regards,

Steve

Why are you using the "Fix My Network Wizard"?

Can you post event log errors (if any) from the following Event Logs:

1. System
2. Application
3. DNS

Please post the XML view of the event.  This way all the info can be read.

Dan
SteveWright01Author Commented:
Hi Dan,

There are no errors showing under the DNS or Application event logs only the attached one from the System log.

Steve

The DCOM issue probably isn't a big deal.  I have a few servers with similar issues, most do not affect the server's operation.

If you want to follow up on the error and investigate, here is an article on how to ID the COM object that is complaining.

And the "Fix My Network Wizard," is there a reason you're using it?

Dan
SteveWright01Author Commented:
Hi Dan,

I'll look into the DCOM as a matter of course to see if I can resolve.

I only found these issue the other day after running the "Fix My Network Wizard" when our Draytek adsl router failed (the psu died on it) and I have dropped in a Netgear one temporarily. I'd opened up some of the ports through the routers webpage but it still wasn't running correctly so i ran the wizard and that's when the fun began!.
