How to change the bash shell prompt?

I would like to have a shell prompt which would show like below:

root hostname OS PWD

where root would be red and flashing and OS would be debian or redhat as per the OS. How can I integrate with ssh. Like whenever I ssh to a new host then my bash prompt would be set and few of my aliases would be available? I do not want to put them in .bashrc file in all the server. Is there a way I can integrate it with ssh?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Add this into your .bashrc file for root.

export PS1="[\[\e[1;31m\]\u@\h \[\e[0m\] `lsb_release -a | grep Distributor | cut -d: -f2 | tr -d '[[:space:]]'` \W]\$"

Unfortunately, there is no way to make the prompt blink that I know of.
