Opinions please: Purchase Exchange or Exchange Online

Hi Folks,

Simple question:

Company of 55 staff, should we purchase Exchange or should we go to Exchange Online cloud service hosted by MS. What would you do?

My clients use Hosted Exchange (a couple third party Hosted Exchange and a couple Microsoft Exchange) . For a company up to around 50 (or even beyond), hosted email is generally less expensive and allow It resources to focus on other problems.
It depends on your current IT infrastructure and personal. Exchange servers need to be properly maintained, the server hardware replaced every couple of years. If you already have IT personal in your company who know how to run exchange and have the time to maintain it, then it would be advisable to run your own exchange servers. If you don't already have those people available, then hosted exchange would probably be better.

I would examine my company's needs, requirements, and skill sets and forecast costs for exchange administration, licenses, office licenses and keep in mind once you're in the cloud getting out (and backing up) may be very difficult. Don't assume or even expect MS to backup for you. And understand that this can have added costs you wouldn't have if you bought outright such as periodic training or productivity decreases as MS forces you to upgrade when you might have otherwise not needed to for several more years. Done companies, this won't matter. Others, it is a very important consideration that shouldn't be forgotten or ignored.

Bottom line: a good answer won't come from a forum - it Will come from a proper evaluation Of costs and requirements that requires far more detail than you're likely going to be able to reasonably provide strangers On a forum.
