ESXi 5.5 to Update 3

Hi

I am looking at upgrading some ESXi 5.5 to the latest update in our datacentre in the US.  They are having a few issues with Server 2012r2 VM's getting stuck on the startup screen.

I have inherited this site, and they don't appear to have Update Manager or anything else installed, so I'm looking to install this via SSH and the esxcli software profile update command.  I have got the SSH configured etc.

I just wanted to check that I've got the correct version :

Release Date: Sep 16, 2015
Download Filename: update-from-esxi5.5-5.5_update03.zip
Build: 3029944

Am I OK to install this as is, or do I need the previous updates ?  I don't think I do but just wanted to be sure.

Thanks
Matthew

Just go ahead and update using the latest available (it includes all the other/older updates).

see my EE Article

HOW TO: Upgrade from VMware vSphere Hypervisor ESXi 5.1 to VMware vSphere Hypervisor ESXi 5.5 for FREE

the same command is used for all updates.

esxcli software profile update -d /vmfs/volumes/your_datastore/ESXi550-patch.zip -p ESXi-5.5.0-patch-standard

the latest is

Thanks Andrew

I've tried to run the update with the following command

# esxcli software profile update -d /vmfs/volumes/mydatastore/Images/update-from-esxi5.5-5.5_update03.zip

but when it runs I dont get any notification to say its completed.  The terminal just sits on the > prompt.

If I read your guide correctly I should get an output after about 20 seconds ?

I must be missing something :)  Can you see where I could be going wrong ?

Thanks for all your help

Hi Andrew

I thought so,  I've just re-checked the command syntax.  When you mention specifying the profile is this the bit you mean ?

esxcli software profile update -d /vmfs/volumes/your_datastore/ESXi550-patch.zip -p ESXi-5.5.0-patch-standard

I think I missed the last bit in bold/italics.

Cheers
Matthew
