Windows 8.1 will not pick up the Product key in BIOS

I have an Hp 15 laptop that the hard drive quit so I replace the hard drive and now I am attempting to install the OS.  The problem is that I do not know what OS was originally installed.  I know it had to be either windows 8 pro or 8.1.   I have 8.0 pro, 8.1, 8.1N, and 8.1.  Since the product key is embedded in the BIOS, It seems that one of those OS's would pick up the respective license key, but I have tried every one of them and neither one will pick it up.  How can I know what OS is the correct one that will pick up the License Key?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Are you using a retail install disk?  You need to be using an OEM disk.  Contact HP and see if you can get the correct media from them.

You should be able to for a small fee.
Tried 8 home?
I doubt that retail vs. OEM does even matter. Hasn't for me.

I downloaded these OS's from the Microsoft website (ISO) and am using a flash drive.  I have used this method many times with no trouble. But this one won't take.
Do you know where I can get the 8 Home? Like I said, I got the 8.1 off of Microsoft website, but seem to can't find the 8.
Active Protection takes the fight to cryptojacking

While there were several headline-grabbing ransomware attacks during in 2017, another big threat started appearing at the same time that didn’t get the same coverage – illicit cryptomining.

The media creation tool offers to download home, too.

can you provide a link? I can find media ceation tool for windows 8 but I am needing a product key (Which is embedded in the BIOS) I am needing a download that doesn't need a product key.
Scott CSenior EngineerCommented:
Try this page.  It let me start the download without asking for a product key.

I chose Windows 8.1.  Didn't say home or not.

Unless it says pro it is home

I went to that link, but the thing that was offered was 8.1 versions, not 8.0.
McKnifeCommented: Does that one let you download 8?
Can be used with this dummy key: FB4WR-32NVD-4RW79-XQFWH-CYQG3 (works here)
The key cannot be used for activation and needs to be exchanged (which should be automatic)

I apologize for not getting back with you on this.  I seem to get busy with all kinds of other things and forget to get back
I finally just purchased a product key and install the OS (windows 8.0)
I then upgraded the system to Windows 10 and everything worked fine.

   Thanks for your help
