excel question

I have a column that has varchar values in it.   the values can be anywhere from 6 to 9 digits long.
some of the values have an 'a' as the last digit.

I need a formula that takes the varchar value that has an 'a', removes the 'a' and places the new value in column b

example

767771a    767771
87877777a 87877777
