Windows 2012 not booting in VMware ESXi 5.5u3

Hi everyone

I have a problem with a couple of WIndows 2012r2 VMs that are sticking when booting up.  I have done a hard reset on each of them, I have also updated the hosts to the latest version of ESXi 5.5 (build 3029944) but still having the issue.

VM version: 8
Each VM has multiple vCPU's

When I power cycle one of the VM's I get the Preparing Automatic Repair screen, and then the Windows Splash screen, and then nothing.  The VM has been in this state for at least half an hour since the last time I restarted it.

I have also tried the following workaround in the Vmware knowledge base

First method: Manually editing the VM's vmx file one VM at a time.
1. Power off the VM
2. Add the following line to the vmx file:
monitor_control.enable_softResetClearTSC = "TRUE"
3. Reload the VM
4. Power on the VM again.

I think the VM does eventually boot up OK, but these servers are for a client in the US, and I need to be confident that the servers are available when they come in.

Has anybody got any more advice ?

Has a Windows Update gone bad ?

I seem to recall, someone stating that recent Windows Updates could cause issues with VMware vSphere.

You are patched to the very lastest ESXi ?
Matthew HinchliffeIT EngineerAuthor Commented:
I can't see any failed updates on the the VM that I can access.  There have been some updates applied but not that recently.

I have patched all the hosts to ESXi 5.5 Build: 3029944

I haven't deleted any snapshots at all.  Hopefully there will be something from VMWare soon, as its causing quite a few problems now.
Matthew HinchliffeIT EngineerAuthor Commented:
I have gone back to an earlier snapshot, however the issue remains.

The only other thing is that VMware Tools is showing as Not Running (Out-Of-Date) but I don't know how to upgrade it while the guest is "stuck" and whether that would be causing the problem anyway ?
Andrew Hancock (VMware vExpert / EE MVE^2)VMware and Virtualization ConsultantCommented:
VMware Tools mismatched with host should not cause an issue, but it's always recommended to have the correct version.
Matthew HinchliffeIT EngineerAuthor Commented:
OK, I didnt think so, I restarted the vm again from the previous snapshot and it's restarted OK after all that.  So at least I can start moving forward now :)

Thanks for your help as ever

Just FYI, in reference to that new VMWare issue, a lot of VM server backups use snapshots.
