DCPROMO Domain Controller running exchange 2010

We are currently running 2008 R2 Standard edition being a DC that also has exchange 2010 running.  We have another DC running that can handle the network.  We tried to DCPROMO but failed stating the other DC did not have certain information and stops.  I am wondering if DCPROMO /forceremoval would do anything with Exchange at all or if anyone has successfully done this before.

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Exchange does not like addition or removal of roles.  Also note that it is not recommended to install Exchange on a DC.  If you need to demote the DC, move the Exchange to another server first prior to running dcpromo.

No do not do a forceremoval. Exchange would have nothing to do with it.

Or you promoting a member server to a DC, or demoting an existing DC to a normal member server?
Or are you installing a new server or a new server with a different OS version?
Did you run the ADPREP /ForestPrep and ADPREP /DomainPrep before promoting a new server to a DC?
Have you checked the Event Viewer such as a the Directory Services log for errors?

We have another server with Exchange 2010 that we are replicating to which is not a DC.  The reason we need to dcpromo the existing Exchange server is we need to upgrade it to Server 2008 R2 Enterprise.  Memory is being maxed out at 32GB and need to install more memory.  Unfortunately the Standard version only sees 32GB RAM.

It won't let you run because Exchange 2010 have dependencies of RSAT tools, when you will try DCPROMO it will remove RSAT tool as well and also once you are done with DCPROMO you server may not be in domain. So exchange will be messed up...

Better you uninstall Exchange first if you have another server which is having same services and mailboxes DBs then run DC promo
