Windows 10

Hi,

I have Windows build 10162 and I am trying to upgrade to the official Win 10 but need some directions.  Since the temp one expired on 10/1, it starts to reboot by itself every few hours...thx

What does it show you in the event logs when this happens?

How did you upgrade the last time?

Is this Windows 10 Professional  or Home?
JohnBusiness Consultant (Owner)Commented:
Also, go to Settings, Updates and Check for Update. There may be an update there for you to do.

Look down in Advanced Options to see if a new build is there for you.

Suggest you call windows service for support on your upgrade and quote your valid MS key.

It is win 10 home.  I installed this windows 10 preview by sending ms request.

I checked the updates, it says all is up to date.

I was trying to roll back to 8.1, but still no go..thanks

Did you look in Advanced Section for Build Updates ?
mcrmgAuthor Commented:
yes, I did.  I dont see anything regarding for Build Updates.

by the way, in the advanced, there is "Get Insider builds", is this what you are referring to? (I did not use MS account) thx
JohnBusiness Consultant (Owner)Commented:
I used Insider Builds to update my Preview version.

Try the image creation link to see if you can get the production version going that way.

you could try the media creation tool and update your machine
JohnBusiness Consultant (Owner)Commented:
I think I used the term image creation rather than media creation. It is the same link, though.

oops your post wasn't there when I looked. ignore my post
mcrmgAuthor Commented:
okay, I am at the point that I need to enter product key.  I am not sure why I am asked to enter the key as  I purchased this laptop with win8 loaded.  I upgraded it to 8.1.

There is no sticker on the bottom.  thanks
JohnBusiness Consultant (Owner)Commented:
You should not need a key if upgrading from Windows 8.1. Did you wipe out Windows 8.1 getting to Windows 10 Preview?

You might have to start again, install Windows 8.1 and then upgrade to Windows 10 after.
David Johnson, CD, MVPOwnerCommented:
skip it both times.. if it was activated at one time it will then re-activate
mcrmgAuthor Commented:
No, I upgraded to win 10 preview directly from win8.1.
mcrmgAuthor Commented:
Do you suggest me to just X it out of product key screen?  thanks
JohnBusiness Consultant (Owner)Commented:
All Windows needs a key to activate. You cannot just X it out.

So you have a Preview Build running, you cannot update to Production, you run the media creation link (Production link) and it asks for a key. That means it cannot find Windows 8.1 (and you said you could not restore). So it looks like all you can do is start again with Windows 8.1
JohnBusiness Consultant (Owner)Commented:
See if skipping the key works, but it should have worked the first time. Something has gone wrong.
mcrmgAuthor Commented:
Can you give me some directions on how I can reinstall 8.1?  thx
mcrmgAuthor Commented:
actually, I would be happy if I could roll back to 8.1..thx
JohnBusiness Consultant (Owner)Commented:
First try skipping by the activation as David suggested and see if that works.

Otherwise you need the Windows 8.1 media to rebuild from.

Somewhere Windows 10 needs to activate and if skipping it does not find the activation in the Microsoft Store, then starting from Windows 8.1 is the only other way I know.

When I X out the page, it rolled everything back (windows 10), now I am back to win 10 preview
JohnBusiness Consultant (Owner)Commented:
I am not sure what you have done. I have upgraded several machines and the upgrade activated from my base system. Others here have use the media creation link we pointed to and successfully upgraded. I myself have used the media creation link and it has upgraded and activated.

So I think your activation is gone. I am not sure how or what you might have done, but I think you have to install Windows 8.1 again.

Windows 10 is very good if you can get there.
