I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

In normal mode, the access is determined by the user login accounts stored in each FileMaker file. Normally, when you connect using File > Open Remote...  FMS displays all files available on the server. You then select a file and if your user name and password successfully open the file you're all set.

For additional security, you can:
1. Turn on file display filter which requires the user to enter their username and password before any files are displayed. It then shows only files for which those login credentials exist

2. Restrict login to specific IP addresses

3. Turn on SSL connections

4. Use an external user directory like LDAP
