New Android not syncing Facebook contacts

I recently switched to Verizon and got a new Samsung Galaxy S6 edge plus.  My old phone was a Galaxy S4.

The issue is my Facebook contacts will not sync with my new device.

I have tried many remedies to fix this.  I'd like to think I'm tech savvy, but this has been annoyingly stubborn.

LinkedIn, Google and other contacts sync without issue

Remove and add your Facebook account under settings / accounts of your phone.

Make sure auto sync is turned on.

Check if your phonebook has been set to display all accounts and contacts including those contacts which do not contain a phone number.

Also double check your Facebook account settings using a PC to make sure that you have not turned on any wierd Privacy settings in it.

Also double check the password field of your Facebook account in your phone.

I had tried everything mentioned.

Using a PC to access my account:

I tried to activate text messaging thinking that could help.  The instructions said to send "F" to 32665.  When I do I don't get a confirmation code back.

I didn't see anything under Privacy setting that could affect this.

Also, I noticed that my Samsung account wasn't set up for syncing.  Turning that on didn't help.

Facebook app / menu / app settings (under help and settings please scroll a lot) / continuos contacts upload - turn it on.

I took my device to the Samsung store inside Best Buy and to my local corporate Verizon store.  I was advised buy everyone to do a factory reset and that would fix it.

It appears that is my only option.
