Need Utility to Track on Employees activities

Several of my customers say that their employees are wasting time on personal social media
instead of working. CCTV does not help. Is there a way of recording details of Websites visited
programs loaded etc.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

There are a few ways.  The most obvious and popular one is to use a caching proxy like Squid on  your network.  You set up the browsers to use the proxy, and all the traffic is logged.  You can then find a log analyzer to produce reports.

There are proxies that operate transparently. I think Untangle firewall is one of these. There are also howtos about setting these up with the standard unix services.

If they have simple desktops, then isn't there some application that can do this ?

First of all check what the law states for where you are.  As an example in province of Quebec, data can also be used for looking at trends, etc and cannot be used to target individuals.

Look at WebMarshal as it does everything you want as well as Squid.  Another option would be Untangle.

Our Barracuda device lets us block websites and categories that upper management doesn't want employees to be looking at. It works great for company computers on the network, but we don't have a way to block what they do on their personal smart phones.
