It has the same default setting as it did before the uograde.

It should, in there, show a depiction of the external speakers. Does it?  And does the picture say the speakers are working but are not?

The reason for the question is that I wonder if there might be a hardware problem.

were the speakers working before, with win8 ?  if not upgrading won't help
test them on another system to be sure - unless they are intern , laptop speakers
any errors in device manager ? if so, post a screenshot

It may be  a hardware issue. I going to a clean install to Windows 8.1 and see if this will resolve the problem. Thanks for the suggestions

Yes they were. Have been working fine. Tried on another system and they work fine

what system is it?  are there windows10 drivers on the site available?

Since it is not a hardware issues, the drivers for the speakers may not be Windows 10 compliant.
