Directives using angularjs to increase width of a cell

Hi Experts,

We are developing responsive web design using angularJS and angular material design.I have 8 field names
in my screen and my requirement is I need to write a directive once I focus on  any of the fields, its width should double up  (to display whole data) and as I tab out it should fall back to original size.I am using flex in angular material design.
Is this achievable? if yes any sample code will be highly appreciated

<md-item ng-repeat="Employee in Foo.Employees track by $index">
<div layout="row" layout-sm="column" layout-fill>
<div flex="50">

Open in new window

Thanks in advance

My 2 cents worth. I don't know "flex" nor "angular material design" but I'd set up two CSS classes for the element needing to be expanded/contracted and catch the ngBlur and ngFocus events which then change the class. There's probably a more elegant design with a directive which looks for such events on it;s siblings which one can then apply to the top container. But I have never done that before.
