Access and separaing/modifying names - Resources

Can anyone please offer a resource on how to separate/modify name fields in Access. I use various examples from internet searching, and previously provided answers from EE - but Ii would love to have one or two thorough and comprehensive resources that will enable me to understand how the forumulas work (i.e. mid, left, right, etc)?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Thank you for this - this is helpful.

It would be wonderful to have examples with Access SQL - since I so often make my own formulas, but they are never just right (that is when to use Right, Left, -1, +1, etc).

click on Help,
type in the search window, say Mid
and it will give a detailed desription and examples
