asked on

scenario for VSAN

Hi all

we have 4 old ESXI servers with HBAs using fiber storage  and these 4 old servers has vsphere enterprise license . these 4 servers has 100 VMs up and running

now we bought 5 new servers with vsphere enterprise plus license and VSAN license and we will build VSAN cluster

after we will build the new VSAN cluster we will join one of the old servers to the VSAN cluster and start vmotion the vms to the vsan data store

but we have one small problem

i want to configure on the new VSAN cluster vmware distribution switch becuse the new servers has  enterprise plus license

but the old servers has only standard switch so what can i do in this case to manage at the same time use VDS and vmotion the VMs from old data store to the VSAN data store

wish you good day

Just create a new vSwitch (a dummy vSwitch), with the same Network Label as the old virtual machine portgroup, but with no network interfaces.

This will satisfy the vMotion condition, when you have vMotion the VM, and it's on the new server, then switch the virtual machine, to the portgroups on your distributed switches.

There will be a short VM network outage, as you will have to re-connect the live network.

so as i understand

1- add one of the old servers which has the VMs i need to migrate to VSAN to the vsan cluster
2- create Vswitch (( vkernerl port )) with the same name on the old servers but without interface and without IP
3- then vmotion the vms fron old data store to the VSAN data store should work right ?
