I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Rufus did not give me an option  to burn to my usb.
what are you trying to burn to a flash drive ? the steps for making a bootable usb drive are different from putting simply data on it
this one does it :  http://www.isotousb.com/

**note   - burning is only done to CD/DVD

but you can do it yourself by using diskpart
here is how :  http://blogs.technet.com/b/danstolts/archive/2012/07/26/create-bootable-usb-thumb-drive-key-using-diskpart-with-windows-8-media-to-install-windows-8-release-preview-or-other-operating-system.aspx

The only thing that Rufus does is pick up an ISO and save it to a USB, so how you couldn't do that?

Do you have the ISO created to begin with? otherwise you will need to convert files to an ISO image, for that you can use LCISO Creator (http://descargar.cnet.com/LC-ISO-Creator/3000-2646_4-75449765.html)
it's dead esay to do.

Once you have the ISO, use rufus and create the bootable USB from the ISO, selecting the ISO image, the USB device and pressing Start.

Your information that burning to a USB is different than burning to a DVD is new to me. Thanks for the info.
I was burning a Linux program and now I have the instructions on how to burn the dvd and then crreate the usb bootable from those files (syslinux.exe). I required a usb boot because I couldn't get her computer to boot from the dvd but I have also solved that problem.
I have the iso but thanks for the instructions re creating an iso. I will probably use that in the future.
Gustav thanks but I should have made it clear that I was not burning a windows iso but a linux iso.
Thanks to all
vlogg5, with a CD/DVD, there is actually a laser burning the info on the media
with a flash stick - which is purely ram, you simply write it to the stick -  no burning done there

and tx for feedback

How obvious is that. Do I feel stupid. Again, thanks for the info.

and for the extra feedback after I had already awarded points.
hey - no need to feel stupid
there is nobody who knows it all - and the oones who think they do - make the biggest  mistakes
you probably picked the term somewhere up (internet) - that's all
anyway, glad to help
