I was looking for an IT environment schema if you like for a new CMDB. I.,e so every individual entitiy in your companies IT setup. 2 obvious categories would be hardware and software, and then hardware could probably sub divided into many categories, but we are more after top level ideas or any examples that already exist in which we can pool our exisiting CI (IT assets). I am not to concerned about software assets and categories (although it would be useful) but need some ideas for splitting hardware assets into logical &quot;groups&quot; and titles for those groups.

IT environment schema

Hardware includes cell phones and other digital living devices, tablets, computers, servers, peripherals and components, printers and scanners, gaming consoles, networking hardware such as routers, hubs, switches and modems, storage devices and security equipment such as firewalls and other appliances.

Hardware

Networking is the process of connecting computing devices, peripherals and terminals together through a system that uses wiring, cabling or radio waves that enable their users to communicate, share information and interact over distances. Often associated are issues regarding operating systems, hardware and equipment, cloud and virtual networking, protocols, architecture, storage and management.

Networking

Networking hardware includes the physical devices facilitating the use of a computer network. Typically, networking hardware includes gateways, routers, network bridges, modems, wireless access points, networking cables, line drivers, switches, hubs, and repeaters. But it also includes hybrid network devices such as multilayer switches, protocol converters, bridge routers, proxy servers, firewalls, network address translators, multiplexers, network interface controllers, wireless network interface controllers, ISDN terminal adapters and other related hardware.
