Exchange online query

We have a client who at present does not have a domain controller with ADU&C in place. They are just computers networked in an office. If they were to purchase exchange online, do they require an active directory to be able to log in or are the usernames/passwords generated and stored online?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

They will have a separate username and password for Exchange Online. If they own some vanity domain name, they can verify it in O365 and have their usernames in the user@vanitydomain.com format. Otherwise it will be user@tenant.onmicrosoft.com.
