Window 2012 partition

What's the normal size assigned to Window 2012 C drive ? Is it common to just format the whole RAID in C: and install everything there for file and application servers ?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I like to give the system drive at least 100GB. But I definitely like to keep the data on another partition at least. Often on other drives or arrays.

Will that be too small, in the window is keep patching with latest update ??

I don't think so but you do need to manage the space. You can clean up the SxS folder and make sure applications are writing to the proper volume. If you don't want to worry about it and you have the space to provision, then give it more. I suppose I have the luxury of dealing with LUNs and virtual disks that can be expanded if needed.

there is no hard and fast rule for that
minimum requirement is 32gb though how much bigger than that can depend on a number of factors including if it's physical or virtual, what is the role of the server, what are any application requirements

Is it common to just format the whole RAID in C:

some do, some don't; a lot of that is preference
if jeremy wants a 100gb system partition, fine - that's his choice
sometimes applications like exchange and sql should have separate raid arrays for databases and logs

you can't redirect to another disk but if you install the desktop experience feature you get the disk cleanup button in the disk properties which might recover some space

I agree with Seth. My comments are what I have found to work with the large variety of systems I deal with. There are definite advantages to keeping the system drive small and not putting data on it but it's not a requirement.

Also, to clean up the side-by-side folder, in addition to the cleanup button, you can also remove the roles and features that are not installed. By default, all packages are stored in the SxS folder at setup. If you remove them from the system you'll either need to create a repository on the network or provide the install media when you want to install roles or features.
