screen shot capture lossy

I have an application that I am developing. At certain points, I do a screen capture and save. However the screen capture is lossy and my results in paint/gimp look blurry, Is there a way to capture the results of an application?  This is not a doc/office/text app with an inbuilt publish as pdf/ps but rather a third party gaming app.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Open a terminal window and enter the following line and hit return:

defaults write type tiff;killall SystemUIServer

This will change our screenshot format to TIFF which is not lossy.

is this for an mac?

My machine is windows. I get the following error.

C:\Users\pinkpanther>defaults write type tiff;killall SystemUIServer
'defaults' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
Sorry. That was for a Mac.

Did you just want to grab a screenshot? of your desktop or inside a game?
You mention importing it in Gimp? and also>but rather a third party gaming app.<< this you wish grab a screenshot of the results?.
What have you been using?
If the tool grabs a desktop and the save setting is small then it will be blurry when opening in full screen, can you change the lossy capture?
In windows 7 there is the snipping tool, type into search snipping tool and then rightclick it and pin to taskbar, once you take a snip it can be pasted into an email or word or simply saved as jpeg or png.
If it is inside a game I find most games have the snip key either F9 or F10 possible just the PrtScrn key on your keyboard and paste it into paint or it saves to games folder.
More details please.
