Excel spreadsheet data to SQL Database

I have an Excel file containing 40,000 records. Is there a straightforward method to upload this data to a SQL database?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

you can use a distributed query to achieve that.

'Data Source=C:\test\xltest.xls;Extended Properties=Excel 8.0')...[Customers$]

Note that the C:\ is relative to the server.

If it's just a one time thing then you can also just use the data import wizard in SSMS.  It gives you a little more control over datatypes etc.

I initially had problems withi solution with an error message indicating that  AccessDatabaseEngine components were not installed on my machine. Once I downloaded and ran AccessDatabaseEngine.exe, it worked like a charm
