How do I pass my string "tablename" as json to my controller in asp.net

I have a script in my view that calls my action controller

<script>
    $('#table1_button').click(function (e) {
        e.preventDefault();

        $.ajax({
            url: '/Home/ViewTable',
            dataType: 'JSON',
            data: 'tablename : table1',
            type: 'GET',
            beforeSend: function () {
                $('#result').text('Now getting table. Please wait...');
            },
            success: function (data) {
                console.log(data.result);
                if (data.result == 'success')
                    $('#result').html(data.html);
                else
                    $('#result').text('Error occurred.');
            }
        });
    });
</script>

Open in new window

And in my controller

        public ActionResult ViewTable(string tablename)
        {
            return new EmptyResult();

        }

Open in new window

However when I breakpoint to my ViewTable function, I receive a tablename of 'null'

What am I doing wrong here?
How do I pass json to my controller from jquery ajax?

Thanks.

I already got this working. Just a syntax error on data: 'tablename : table1' part.

should be data: 'tablename=table1',
