Email error - Remote SMTP server has rejected address

I'm trying to help my mom solve a problem with her email. When anyone tries to send her an email they receive the error message: Reason: Remote SMTP server has rejected address
Diagnostic code: smtp;550-5.1.1 The email account that you tried to reach does not exist.

The thing is, she does receive the email. The other strange thing is that the error email is saying (I am replacing the correct address with xxxx):
Recipient address: xxxx@gmail.com
 Original address: xxxx@mac.com

When this started happening she deleted her gmail account hoping that would fix it but it didn't. I'm not sure what to tell her and an hour of Google searches hasn't come up with a solution.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi.

The attached doc lists smtp error codes.  Your 550 starts at the bottom of page 17.  Without reading all the details, which I will leave with you to experiment, I would guess it is the @mac.com email address causing the problem.  Apple quit using them but I'm not sure if they left some existing accounts alone.  Like grandfathered in you might say.  My @mac.com email address was taken away years ago and I was not allowed to keep it.  You may have to contact apple to get the exact info for her account.  But first read through the 550 error and maybe experiment some so you have more info.

What do you think?
