C++ Visual studio appliication - how to add to Windows Explorer right click menu

I am creating a program in C++ using Visual Studio 2008, and I want to be able to add right click functionality to the program, so if you right click on a file or folder it will open the program invoke a program function. I cannot seem to be able to find any material on this. Can someone point me in the right direction?

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You mean you want to add custom options for a program on right click in windows Explorer?

you can add a link to your program into the sendto folder which is below

   c:\users\<your_account>\appdata\roaming\microsoft\windows\

after doing so, your program should appear below 'send to' in explorer context menu.

you could add an 'association' to an extension for example .xyz. the simplest way to do so is to right-click in explorer to a file with that extension while the  ctrl key is pressed. then 'open with ...' menu item should be available where you can associate your program to open .xyz files in future as the default program.

such an association is stored in windows registry below HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications.

for a registered program you could add more complex associations and add additional 'functions' like 'print' or others. if you use assoc command at the commandline you could see more associations for file extensions.

to find more information search for "shellex" or "shell extensions".
