I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Hi,
the source tag has to be the child of either a "VIDEO" or "AUDIO" tag (and picture) - please see here the parents requirements:

Hi,

In general i saw at least two orphaned closing span tags, and no closing div tag for your initial div. Even after fixing these i ran it through the validator and got even more errors:

1. Bad value 78px for attribute width on element img: Expected a digit but saw p instead.
2. An img element must have an alt attribute, except under certain conditions. For details, consult guidance on providing text alternatives for images.
3. Bad value 350px for attribute width on element img: Expected a digit but saw p instead.
4. Duplicate ID A2.

and lots more.

I would suggest load the page in your browser, get the rendered source code, and paste it on an editor. Then start manually formatting the document with proper indentation. You will finally find all those issues. Then go through the validator that will point out more errors like the duplicate ids or the unit of measure in the width elements. Not to mention that width and height should be handled by css and not by inline attributes. Style attribute may be an exception.

If you need more help let me know.

greetings  Mike Eghtebas, , I agree with  Ioannis Paraskevopoulos  that you really need to "Clean Up" the HTML tags and bad attributes, , and get your Page Code Arrangement to be more usable and clear.

As to your Val Error - "source is not allowed as child of a div", , this code block -
<div class="workDescription">
  <b>Senior Data Analyst & Developer</b>: Developed
  <a href="./Projects.html#PerformanceDashboard">
    <abbr title="see more on this project."><b>Performance Dashboard</b></abbr>
  </a>
  application in <b>ASP.net, C#/ SQL Server</b>. Developed point-and-click
<!-- Delete this line <source src="./resources/KaiserDatauploadETL.mp4" type="video/mp4"> -->
  <a class="video-link" href="./resources/KaiserDatauploadETL.mp4"
    data-description="Data Upload, Automated ETL (ESC to cancel.)">
    <abbr title="watch demo video.">Data Upload</abbr>
  </a>
  <b>ETL</b> (Extract Transform Load) module to be operated by junior staff with beginner skills as opposed to assigning it to a data adminstrator.

The line for the <source> tag is NOT NEEDED, it does nothing for the functioning oh this code block, do take it out, delete it.   Because you have the link -
  <a class="video-link" href="./resources/KaiserDatauploadETL.mp4"
    data-description="Data Upload, Automated ETL (ESC to cancel.)">
    <abbr title="watch demo video.">Data Upload</abbr>
  </a>
which uses this Javascript -
$('.video-link').click(function(e) {
    var el = $(this);
    e.preventDefault();
  var vbox =  $('<div/>').addClass('videobox').attr('id','conter');
    vbox.append($('<a/>').addClass('close'));
    vbox.append($('<video/>').prop({autoplay: true, controls: true}).attr('src', el.attr('href')));
    vbox.append($('<div/>').html(el.data('description')));

    $('body')
      .append(
        $('<div class="overlay"/>').height(Math.max($(document).height(), $(window).height()))
      .append(
        vbox
      )
    );
  var left  = ($(window).width() - vbox.width()) >> 1;
  var top = $(window).scrollTop() + 50;

  vbox.css({
    left: left + 'px',
    top: top + 'px'
  });
  });

Open in new window

which produces a "videobox" overlay to show a video on the click event of the link, which uses the code -
   .attr('src', el.attr('href'))
to read the href of the <a> and use it as the src of the .append($('<video/>')

Hi Julian,

Adding <video>   /</video> block eliminated the validation error but it displays a full size video box. You may remember from the previous posts, users sees the link text on index.htm not the video box itself.

But after they click on the link the video starts playing.

Hi Mike,

I do remember - there was specific markup for that - which was demonstrated in the sample code I posted. The code did require the use of the <video> tag - the jQuery was linked to that.

Hi Jullian,

This video is called from two pages ('Video..." and "Resume...") Resume is the same as index.html.

re:> The code did require the use of the <video> tag - the jQuery was linked to that.
This relates to "Video.." tab and I do not have any problem with that. Originally it displays video box as icon and when clicked on, it plays the video.

But, in the index.html where the error exists, I have a hyperlink "Data Upload" to click on to get the video started.
<source src="./resources/KaiserDatauploadETL.mp4" type="video/mp4">
<a class="video-link" href="./resources/KaiserDatauploadETL.mp4"
data-description="Data Upload, Automated ETL (ESC to cancel.)">
<abbr title="watch demo video.">Data Upload</abbr></a>

Open in new window

Here is where the error exists.

I understand except that the <source> tag requires a media parent (<video> or <audio>) it cannot stand on its own - hence the error

Rainer and Julian,

You are referring me to the same link. I am reading to find a way to find:

Q: How can I start a video from a hyperlink? Where video tag is not used.

I guess this should be a new question. Please help me with formulating this question. I will close this question after I learn from you how to ask this question.

- Start a video from hyperlink.
- Have no validation error.
- Cannot use video tag because this forces video box to show up. This is not acceptable.
- Source tag produces validation error.

Could this possibly be done via OnClick("Sample.mp4") event to open video?

Thanks,

Mike

Question should then read: how to display video on element click
Rather than how to fix validation error.

In terms of the question asked the answer is: put your <source> inside a <video> tag.

In terms of what you want to achieve.

Your options for showing a video in page are

1. <video> element (disq)
2. IFrame (disq)
3. Popup box
4. Dynamically created video element on click

1 and 2 are out by your stated requirements.

Therefore you are left with 3 and 4 - what are your expectations when you click the <a> link?
Question: when you click
