Small Windows network. Only one server: file/print, no Exchange
We want to replace our Server 2008 R2 with Server 2012 R2. We would prefer new server to use same machine name, and will need to change IP scheme in the end.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

There's quite a few big impact tasks in there, so I would take some time between them. This list isn't exhaustive, so make sure you read the linked documents.

Make sure you have tested, current backups before all the steps.

1. Rename current Server 2008 R2 DC (so that you can reuse the name for new 2012 R2 DC). Documentation on renaming a DC can be found here. Then TEST.

2. Build a 2012 R2 server on your new hardware with server name you intend to use. TEST

3. Migrate your file and print services to your 2012 R2 server. TEST

4. Go through health checks on your current Active Directory environment.

5. Promote 2012 R2 server. You can use relevant parts of this page to guide you through step 4, 5 and 6.

6. Demote your old DC.

7. TEST again.
