Editing excel file

Hello Experts,

I have an excel file that has a column of mobile numbers. The number are showing as (189) xxx-xxxx. I want to add this to the phone number +1 and modify the cell to +1-189-xxx-xxxx. what I try to put +1 and modify the cell and click enter to go to the cell below I the cell behaves as if I am adding the contents from the cell below. Its weird.

Is there another format other than excel or csv I can open it and make the changes on the phone list.

Can you please help me.

Try adding a single quote before the +1
the + is acting as a mathematical operator

Another option is to format the column as text-->Press ctrl+1-->and format cell as text and you will be good on whatever telephone number you enter...This will remain the way it is

I made the cell as text format when I do +1-231-xxx-xxx and go to the next cell if changes the number.

but if I do +1-+1-231-xxx-xxx  and take the cursor to the last digit and press enter it remains. this is terrible

Is it necessary to change the area code from (713)555-5555 to -713-555-5555?
