Hello there,

In case i have already an activated license of windows 2012 and for some reason I have to reformat the computer or switch out to a new machine, is it possible to use the same license and ditch the old machine?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

No need to deactivate

Install the new server using the same activate license

Then when you shutdown the old server you will be ok not in violation

Has Powershell sent you back into the Stone Age?

If managing Active Directory using Windows Powershell® is making you feel like you stepped back in time, you are not alone.  For nearly 20 years, AD admins around the world have used one tool for day-to-day AD management: Hyena. Discover why.

For future references,

I just called Microsoft directly and I was told, to follow the regular procedure to install/activate keys and if for some reason one  couldn't activate onto a new hardware then I would have them a  call  at 1-888-571-2048 and mention "overwrite activation" and they would fix any issues in regards
