Active Directory Rename domain

Hi,

I inherited a domain that does not have a standard FQDN

The domain is name "xyzdomain"
The NetBIOS domain name is "xyzdomain"
The DNS domain name is also "xyzdomain"

The domain does not have an extension like .local or .com

We want to change to domain so it will keep the same NetBIOS name but we will rename the FQDN to "xyzdomain.com"

I know that some application like Exchange 2007 and later does not support this operation and they are running a blend of Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2007 servers.

Since we only want to change the FQDN name and keep the same NetBIOS, What will be the impact ?

They only have 2 DC, and about 12 other servers and about 10  computer for users

How is this possible? When you initally setup a new Forest it fails if you do not have a proper FQDN.

What are you using as your UserPrincipalName?

You can do a domain rename however that would break Exchange so your only option would be creating a new Forest Root domain and then migrating to that one.

Will.
Exchange 2010 for sure and maybe 2013 still support Single Label Domains, but not switching from SLD to FQDN.
