2012 R2 - Allow multiple users to RDP into same server?

It's escaping me how to allow multiple users to RDP into the same 2012 R2 server.
Are 2 allowed to by default? What can be done to allow more?
Also, can you allow multiple people using the same username to RDP into it? Or will that just disconnect the others' session?
You don't have to turn on RDS quick deploy for this, do you?

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

What can be done to allow more?

2 is the limit for a standard Windows server. Two different Users can remote in at the same time. You cannot use the same user twice.

If you want to allow more than 2 Users then you need to enable Remote Desktop Services and you need to purchase RDS CALs for this to work. Aside from that 2 is the limit without RDS.

Ok thanks, so with RDS, could I specify a licensing server that is used by another RDS environment? Or can you only have one licensing server per RDS environment

USERS cannot RDP into a server.  ADMINISTRATORS can.  UNLESS you setup the server as an RDS server.

The 2 remote connections built in to Windows Server are licensed for Administrative purposes, not end users.  If you want/need your end users connecting you must setup the server as a Remote Desktop Server (RDS) server and purchase the appropriate RDS Client Access Licenses.

Ok and can they use the same username to sign in if it's RDS?
Or is there no option to allow that, meaning if "UserNameA" signs in from one computer, and somebody else on a different computer signs in as "UserNameA", they will disconnect the other person?
Lee W, MVPTechnology and Business Process AdvisorCommented:
They CAN but it will disconnect the other user.  RDS Licensing is per human being, Not per connection and not per account.
