Install Window 2012 Domain on

We have a client that are running Window 2000 domain. We are planning to put a Window 2012 domain. These two domains are separate but they will have a same domain name, say abc.local

Is it possible to setup Window 2012 domain on the same network ? We will carry out phrase migration. Once the Window 2012 domain is setup, we will first high code the IP address and point to the new Window 2012. Once the migration is completed, we will phrase out the Window 2000 and set back the client workstation to obtain DHCP.

There shouldn't be any conflict for Window 2000 & Window 2012 with the same domain, correct ? Any comment on this approach ?

Tks

First Migrate FSMO rules to 2012 then add another DC with in existing forest

You will need to add a server 2012 server into your existing domain and then migrate roles to new domain.  You can't run two domains with the same name in parallel. There are some really good migration guides on the net. The main issue is your DNS and ip network.

the current domsin is Window 2003, is it still fine to move its fsmo to. wondow 2012

sorry. just check the clients domain is Window 2000,

does it make any difference?

what issue will occur if Window 2000 and Window 2012 running the same domain name in the network ? They are completely separate and user workstation are highcode with DNS point to new Window 2012 ?

tks

You could do that.  But you won't be able to migrate any user accounts between them. It is a long way around doing a job that thousands have done before. It also has high risk.  You would need to probably run seperate network switches and run both domains in total seperate network to ensure no issues.  But again there is no point.  As long as domain functional level is Windows 2000 then workstations running 2000 will still work.  I would look to replace Windows 2000 workstations as soon as possible.

Can domain Window 2000 can still be intergrated with domain 2012 ?  That is domain and functional evel will be 2000 for a whole,

Sorry, I have just re-read my notes. You will need to first migrate to Server 2003 and then upgrade to Server 2012.

if you can't do this, then you will need to have two separate domains and do manual transfer of all logons and computer accounts.
