sharepoint permissions on site collection subsites

Hi,

We are looking to limit user access to individual sub sites within a site collection and also limit individual folder access to top site team members and were not even sure if it's possible.

In SharePoint 2013 online we have created one top site with three sub sites. Within each sub site we have created anywhere from one to 14 addl sub sites each with a document library. The top site members at the main office need to have access to all the location sites with the exception of one HR folder. The location sub sites need to be accessed only by the GM or AGM for that site. Questions:

- can we add a user to the location team site with out giving them permission to the top level site and thereby all other team sites
- can we add a user to the top level team site and then remove permissions to individual folders at the location sub site level
- Is it possible to achieve the above to permission changes without re-configuring everything we've configuring

Thanks.

Here's an update to removing specific group permissions on a folder or file while leaving other folders shared with top site team members:

First we created the top site followed by the subsite which inherited permissions from the top site. We then went into the subsite site settings > site permissions clicked on stop inheriting permissions and specified a new group. from there we added users to that group. (link in previous post)

To create a private folder within any team site for specific group / users:

1. create folder
2. Navigate to shared with for folder created
3. click advanced
4. choose stop inheriting permissions
5. select group or groups to remove / edit permissions
6. click either edit or remove permissions
