Windows XP internet problem

Hi, this machine, HP pavilion zd8000 has been in a closet for a couple of years but I have found a need for it today.  I have a Home Network System computers/TV, etc. and at one time it worked on the home system but I loan it to a friend and now it no longer connects to the network.  What do I need to do to get it going again? Thanks

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

is it getting an ip address from your router? Check the network settings so that in the properties/ ipv4 tcp/ip properties it is set to obtain an ip address automatically and obtain dns server address automatically.
Can you ping another computer on your network?

Try the following:

Open cmd.exe with Run as Administrator
Then  netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
Also, ipconfig /flushdns followed by net stop dnscache followed by net start dnscache
Then restart the computer

See if that helps
