2012 R2 setup with 2 VM's Core can get to the internet - cant ping the VM's The VM's cant ping the core or get to internet
2012 R2 Core IP192.168.4.5 - Mask255.255.255.0 - GW192.168.4.1 VM's are at 4.6 and 4.7 DNS is 192.168.4.5 on all
cant ping between the three - I setup a virtual external switch and point both VM's to it.

Have you tried using a Legacy NIC in the setup of the VM's setting.
Why did you set DNS to 4.5 on all machines? Is your host also running DNS in addition to Hyper-V?? Besides the technical issues that causes, it also eliminates the 1+2 licensing benefits that standard provides. I suspect this is a big part of your issue.

The host is active directory DC and DNS - it is 192.168.4.5 plus 2 vms

do ping test to/from VM to VM/Host with firewall off and share the results

Reconfigured the server based on Cliff statement "Running hyper-v on a DC breaks networking every time. There is no reliable fix. This just plain shouldn't be done. EVER"
