Formatting a 2TB USB

Hi Experts

How long should it take to format a 2TB USB HDD?

The reason why I ask is because I just purchased a pocket drive from Dell, when I plugged it in it asked me to format, and it's been going for 24h, which seems odd.  Can the drive be defective, or is it normal?

i would stop it and do a quick format which should only take a few seconds
sounds like it's doing a full format which would take a long time

A full format could take days or even weeks, depending on the system, type of USB connection, type of drive etc.

A full format checks each cluster, and ensures it reads OK.  A quick format just assumes the drive is 100% good.  If you are concerned and want to test the drive before use, then do a full format. USB 3 is preferable, USB 2 a little slower. USB 1 is rare these days, and not really fast enough to be practical.

I tend to do a full format. Probably leave it going over the weekend.

As you selected format - did you remove the checkbox - quick format? If yes then it is normal. Because during full format each sector of the drive is checked first and there are many many of them.
You can break it up and format the drive using quick format. Should take 1-2 Minutes then.

Even a full format shouldn't take that long...
Dodgy cable?
Unplug it and start again with a quick format
